Dry Practice Ep. 7

Updated: Dec 1, 2025

Dry Practice Ep. 7. Episode 7 is about transitions. Target transitions can be difficult if you have been doing them wrong or in an inefficient manner. Enjoy.

hey what's up guys so welcome to episode

0:11

7 now episode 7 is going to be about

0:14

designated Target or really transitions

0:17

so transitioning from Target to Target

0:20

and what you can get out of this and how

0:22

you can kind of accomplish doing this in

0:24

an efficient manner is pretty important

0:27

now what what I would uh suggest right

0:30

is one you need to move your eyes to

0:33

where you want the gun to meet you right

0:35

if you don't move your eyes to where you

0:37

want the gun to meet you and you try to

0:38

track the dot the entire way uh with

0:41

your vision uh you will fail at doing

0:44

this almost every time but if you don't

0:46

believe me go ahead take your finger

0:48

right now point at an object in your

0:50

house and then try to find another

0:52

object that you want to go and point at

0:54

and then bring your finger to it and

0:55

you'll notice your finger comes right to

0:57

your eyes your gun will do the same

0:59

thing with a little bit of practice

1:00

practice because it is the same

1:02

skill if you don't believe me and you

1:05

want to stare at that same thing put

1:06

your finger on it and then watch your

1:08

finger as you try to bring it across and

1:10

you will see you will have to make minor

1:12

Corrections or major Corrections

1:14

depending on how fast you moved your

1:16

hand or whatever you did uh to correct

1:18

that and that is how you don't want to

1:21

transition targets now if you don't know

1:23

if you are or you aren't doing that you

1:26

will see it if you pay attention enough

1:28

on your situ on on your Target as you

1:30

shoot not saying you need bullet holes

1:33

to tell you cuz that that's just

1:35

historic data but your Red Dot when it

1:37

comes across a Target if it passes a

1:39

Target like this and comes back and then

1:41

you go through the shooting process

1:44

you've gone too far and you're probably

1:46

looking at your sighting system or

1:48

paying attention to your sighting system

1:49

I should say versus if your gun comes

1:52

across and it stops right where your

1:55

eyes are looking then you will see that

1:58

that is 100% % like that's where your

2:01

eyes were and your gun met where your

2:03

eyes were and it all happened

2:04

beautifully and you could press shots

2:06

from there so that is one of the things

2:08

we're going to practice with this

2:09

exercise now a way to set this up is

2:11

just to set up a couple targets like

2:13

this or actually set up designated

2:16

Target which is another exercise that is

2:18

really fun if you want to look up

2:19

designated Target go ahead and Google

2:21

that thing there's tons of videos on it

2:23

as well as obviously diagrams and things

2:26

like that it comes from the Practical

2:27

shooting world as well and it is a a

2:31

really really fun exercise and you can

2:33

honestly do it with anything so if I

2:36

have cardboard targets like these I can

2:38

do that or I can actually do it with

2:40

random objects inside a hotel room or

2:43

pieces of tape around a room just spre

2:46

spread them out space them out if you

2:48

want to change elevations to them and

2:49

stuff you can it is a blasty blast so

2:52

you get to really play around with it

2:54

now designated Target is one of those

2:55

exercises that I'm going to do on a

2:57

regular basis because it works a a lot

3:00

of my vision stuff which is very

3:02

important so I can include my draw into

3:04

it which is very important we can see

3:06

that in previous episodes of this you

3:08

can also incorporate trigger presses

3:11

which will also tell you whether your

3:13

grip was good on each Target and it also

3:16

starts to give you a healthy idea on how

3:20

fast or how slow I need to be based off

3:23

Target size or Target distance in depth

3:26

and you can really play around with this

3:27

on the Range it's very simple to set up

3:30

and you could really do so many reps

3:33

with this thing so I'm going to show you

3:35

guys uh a couple examples of it and just

3:37

using the targets I have set up from uh

3:39

previous times that I just moved them

3:40

around and uh and we're going to go

3:42

ahead and hopefully I'll show you guys

3:44

what it looks like I'm going to use a

3:46

laser so you guys can see where my DOT

3:47

is stopping and good and bad stuff

3:50

versus the Red Dot through this the

3:51

camera because I can't turn the camera

3:54

to each Target at the same time as I'm

3:56

turning the gun it's a little hard so

3:59

what you'll need for this exercise is

4:00

pretty simple your unloaded

4:04

Blaster a weighted dummy uh I honestly

4:08

you could use just an empty gun but I

4:09

like using a MAG with weighted dummy

4:12

rounds so that'll be in there and if you

4:16

have a Glock and you want to shim it

4:18

which is one of the previous episodes

4:19

you could go back and look at that you

4:21

want to shim it you could take a piece

4:22

of paper and shim the Glock so you can

4:24

get multiple presses out of it which is

4:26

recommended

4:28

so let me change the camera around and

4:30

uh help you guys out all right guys so

4:33

what you see and what you're going to

4:35

see is we have a Target that's a little

4:38

bit closer we have this one we have this

4:41

one we have this one and we have this

4:43

one now to do designated Target uh you

4:46

could obviously change them to partials

4:48

and use um smaller targets or bigger

4:51

targets or steel related targets and

4:53

stuff like that but for this exercise

4:55

we're just going to we're we're just

4:57

going to use what we have right now now

5:00

designated Target or using designated

5:02

Target means that I'm going to designate

5:04

one of these targets that I want to

5:06

shoot first and and then after I shoot

5:09

another I'm going to come back and shoot

5:10

that one again and eventually when the

5:12

array is done I will be finishing off on

5:14

it so for example if I use the far-left

5:17

one far-left target here as my

5:21

designated Target then it should look

5:23

something like this I'm coming up here

5:25

bam coming back bam coming back going

5:30

over coming

5:32

back all right and that would be like a

5:34

designated Target array right however

5:37

you want to do it it doesn't matter you

5:38

can start on any Target but e eventually

5:41

you will be shooting that Target in

5:43

between every other Target and before

5:45

you start the array and at the end of

5:47

the array so either way when practicing

5:51

any kind of transitions like I said

5:52

we're going to put our eyes there first

5:54

so no matter how fast I want to do it

5:56

let's say I want to do two on each of

5:57

these papers I I will end up doing the

6:00

same thing going up getting my two

6:02

presses moving

6:08

over right and the dot arrived

6:10

everywhere I put my eyes if the dot

6:13

isn't arriving where you're putting your

6:15

eyes you're probably watching it so for

6:17

example if you watched me move the laser

6:20

around like that well you may have not

6:23

been able to keep up with what I was

6:26

doing but if you just looked at the next

6:28

Target that I you knew was going to go

6:30

to based off the first example you would

6:32

actually see the dot arrive exactly

6:34

where you want it versus the other way

6:37

around where you just see it swiping

6:38

across swiping across so let me show you

6:41

how not to do

6:52

it now as you can see on that one

6:54

there's a lot of hesitation cuz I'm

6:56

doing it wrong which bothers me but

6:58

either way there was a lot of like

7:00

back or past the Target and then going

7:02

into it so it went from one target to

7:05

another Target past it and had to go

7:07

into it before I could shoot that is not

7:10

the way I want to practice this if

7:12

you're not seeing the difference between

7:14

them right now you are probably still at

7:17

a level that you need to start working

7:18

on just standard previous exercises

7:22

before this one and I know that's that

7:24

may hurt your feelings or whatever but

7:25

you need to be realistic about your

7:27

ability to do certain things you can't

7:29

just imagine or be magically good at

7:32

something you need to put in the time if

7:34

you're only doing this once a week

7:36

you're not going to have enough you're

7:38

not going to have enough skill for this

7:39

you need to put in more time in your

7:42

practice to actually be good at it not

7:44

just that but you need to put your eyes

7:47

where you want them right where you want

7:49

the dot to go not follow the dang dot

7:51

you're not a cat okay don't follow the

7:54

dot so that is just an example of

7:57

Transitions and Target arrays uh or just

8:00

a Target array and doing a designated

8:03

Target exercise it is not rocket science

8:06

at all it is honestly just super easy

8:09

movement of the gun but a lot of people

8:12

complicate it because they're looking at

8:13

the actual dot on the the The Optic

8:16

versus looking at the actual Target so

8:20

look at the dang Target all right so

8:22

hopefully this helps guys if you need

8:24

anything put it down below take care
