Shooters Bad Habit #12 is a night vision habit that can be useful and helpful for yourself and others.
all right hey what's up guys so today
let's talk about a bad habit i see
pretty often and most of the time it's
when i'm teaching
night vision courses for civilians or
night vision courses for
the military or law enforcement side
now the the bad habit is when dropping
or putting down your equipment
leaving them on
now it doesn't seem like that big of a
deal like oh i left my mall you know on
ir mode and just put it down on the
table but
what what that potentially
could cause is you forgetting that you
had it on or accidentally hitting the
actual fire buttons
and blazing that laser into somebody's
night vision or your own
so
um
one of the one of the biggest things i
saw at least in the military were like
dudes dudes just forget sometimes right
especially the heat of the moment um in
classes you know when you're overloaded
with too much information or man that
was that was crazy that was hectic
whatever it was
and uh people leave their stuff on
they'll leave it activated and literally
dangling off their sling
so just like when i put down my rifle
and i'm gonna unsling it to like take a
break or get some water go to the
bathroom whatever or i'm done right i'm
done for the day and i'm gonna put it
away like i go through the process of
making sure that one
i
unload my rifle because if it's not
unloaded then like why would i put it
down by itself and i understand there's
certain contexts where you'd be like
okay with it and you know that's life
but when when in a training environment
if i leave my rifle on you know the the
table or i go ahead and prop it up on
something or put it in a rifle rack or
whatever i unload my rifle that way it's
not sitting there just by itself hot not
that it's going to do anything but
if somebody wants to you know finagle
with it or whatever they they can see it
or if i come up to it and i see it with
a bolt locked to the rear with no mag in
it i immediately know the condition of
my weapon right so i can go through that
process the same thing when i put down
my rifle
and i'm not going to use it for the next
you know whatever amount of time i will
go ahead and make sure my laser's off
right make sure like i'm i'm good it's
unloaded and now i can put it down
now
it doesn't seem like that big of a deal
until it happens to you where your laser
or somebody's laser is just on in a
classroom and it blazes right into
somebody else's helmet that they're
putting down their their actual you know
nods on and guess what happens but i am
ruined so
big big issue when it comes to a
class-oriented place right where people
are getting tired they're getting
exhausted they start putting things down
and then they forget
but if i put down my rifle i unload my
rifle and i shut my lasers off and if
they have caps i'll cap them
right so if they have like a little
rubber cap like the raid or they have
the diffusers i'll throw the diffusers
on there like i'll cap them
the same thing goes for when i put down
my night vision so if i go to take my
helmet off and get a break
right i go ahead i make sure my night
vision is off i will cap them or close
my caps depending on what you're using
and stuff like that i'm gonna i'm gonna
start protecting them as much as
possible a lot of times i put them down
and i'll actually put something in the
way so i'll grab like a piece of
equipment and like shove them in the way
when i'm putting them on a table and
like you know chillaxing through through
reps or something like that or if i'm
like going through the shoot house and i
come out into the classroom and i put it
down to go get some water
i'll go ahead and put my my rifle down
right unloaded laser off laser capped
and then put my night vision down
night vision off night vision capped and
sometimes i'll even go ahead and throw
you know some kind of object one of my
pieces of gear or something in front of
it
just
in case
because even your daytime caps have
little pinholes in them and even that
little pinhole can take a laser strike
and then all of a sudden you have a
laser burn in that pinhole uh spot
that's visible in your night vision so
just something to be aware of guys i i'm
a big fan of like taking care of my
equipment as much as possible uh you
invested a lot of money into your
equipment why be lazy and then ruin it
or get it ruined or ruin somebody else's
because i don't know about you but i
don't want to replace somebody's night
vision and i know it's their fault all
that jazz but you also lays the [ __ ] out
of it that's your fault right you're
being you're
you're pretty much being a piece of [ __ ]
so don't be a piece of [ __ ]
but overall guys like just simple things
but it is a bad habit i see on the range
in a shoot house in a training
environment and an operational
environment too so just something to
think about and if you can
pay attention your stuff man shut them
off if you see people's lasers on go
ahead and go go through the process shut
them off so i'm a big fan of it uh if
you if you don't give a [ __ ] cool
[ __ ] shut the video off if you do
hopefully this helps you kind of be more
conscious of the condition of your
equipment and then you make yourself a
better and more professional human being
especially when utilizing your equipment
hope this helps guys take
you
