A Day on the Range

In this video I take you thought a training day on the range. How I practice, diagnose issues and try to correct them.

me now this isn't like how I practice every single time this is going to be just this time because I want to work on

uh some transition stuff and I I also want to work on a little bit of uh like my visual things as usual like there's a

lot of visual stuff that I want to make sure and there's a focus a heavy focus on how I'm mounting my gun to my

shoulder right so how everything's kind of working and and physically kind of uh

recoiling in me or on me or against me I don't know whatever it is so we'll uh

we'll go through it you guys will see kind of like uh what I do but essentially have a bunch of ammo my rifle and uh

because uh obviously I'm doing this out on the Range and I'm doing it with my phone uh cuz currently I'm in Texas

traveling for uh the night op Summit if you haven't been probably uh should try it out man it's kind of fun but I'm out

on their range at the ranch uh in Dilly Texas and this is one of their ranges

out of like I don't know 800 of them and uh I am doing my own thing for today

since uh classes has haven't started and I'm here earlyish so going to go ahead

and set up some targets and then uh kind of talk you through what I'm thinking and how I'm going to go about uh what I

practice all right guys so for reference I want you guys to see the targets that I'm going to be shooting just so you

guys uh kind of understand where my where I'm coming from so I talked about how I want to do some Transitions and I

need to work on a lot of visual stuff and I also want to be cognizant of my connection to my rifle so VIs ually uh I

don't have any partials so I made some partials with a sharpie and I I forgot my the spray paint up there so I'm using

a sharpy to signify so this side would be the hit Area this would be the hard cover right on this one we're doing a

tuxedo so it'll be good hit Area hard cover hard cover right and on the last

one is just headbox right so just to give me uh references to use so that I

can place my eyes in specific spots now when you set up your targets I I like to set them up so that they

make sense for what I'm trying to accomplish and I I would I would recommend doing something of the sort

but uh everybody's got their own sorry cut off so it it all comes down to like

what you're trying to do and what you're trying to practice guys and what you're trying to accomplish overall so when it

comes to this uh I'm I'm going to be working a little bit of transitions I'm going to spread them out sorry about

that you're welcome dick shots um but when when uh when I work these out I'm

going to spread them out from where they are cuz they're way too close together so I'm going to probably spring spring one out further than that piece of Steel

spring one out a little further out or or maybe closer in depth but I'm going to mess around with them a little bit so

that my eyes can learn where to pick spots on the Target and that way my transitions can you know actually

transition or be transitions versus being uh range [ __ ] so uh you'll see

a bunch of reps of that because I'm going about to do it for two mags but uh but just something to kind of see and

and uh and visualize as you play with this and then we're going to start adding a little bit of probably movement into it because like why

not all right guys uh something else to throw at you I'm also going to be using a new laser so uh I'm going to be

working a lot of that laser stuff just because it's it is new to me and I want to get used to it but I also uh want to

kind of play around with it I want to get some reps behind it live been doing a lot of dry fire the last couple days with it and finally got out to the range

so I get to play with it so let's check it out right so starting somewhere around her

all right so nothing wild but check it out right so kind of looking at what I've what I was doing so my vision was

kind of like trying to place itself here on this Target and I was like all right cool in the game playing it little

mistakes happen and it's kind of cool but you can see here right same thing Vision was trying to place somewhere in

the center is and I got some and then I pushed one pretty hard uh still still in the alpha not too bad and I wasn't

shooting super fast so it wasn't crazy but then on the head only Target on the first rep kept it at the center kind of

gave myself two alpha at the center but that would be hard cover so was freaking mics and then uh over here I had one low

kind of gave it away and then a little bit of work on the head on the last few reps where I really focused in where my

eyes were in the right spot so little things like that are going to happen guys and I suggest kind of you know

getting used to it it is fun but it also is something that happens uh quite often and you should understand why you did it

more than oh no I did it so it's not like uh like I ain't upset about it I'm

just like okay good I saw that happen I saw that I made that mistake visually or mentally or physically and then let's

correct it on the next rep kind of thing so I'm going to Pace those outs pretty much and then uh and then redo this bad

everything landed where I kind of wanted it obviously the the the line Breakers would be better but that that worked out

nicely over here once again pretty open Target it's just uh the tuxedos are

pretty easy shooting um you just any overtravel that you do visually or where if you don't visually and you just whip

the gun over there you're going to see that same [ __ ] and then over here one of them kind of swung a little low just off

my offset cuz I wasn't paying attention enough and my eyes kept gravitating towards this pasty and instead of like

up here by this Alpha so that may be part of the issue there so just something to kind of focus on but this

is what I do on my practice guys I I go through it I go through a rep of some sort I really try to focus on what I'm

doing um the the first couple reps of this last one so I guess set two if you

want to call it that but a couple of the first reps I felt like I was one whipping the gun I kind of messed I I mentioned that but I also noticed that I

wasn't uh engaged with the gun like Mount wise so my shoulder or my grip essentially was pretty yucky on it so I

obviously had to like rehon that and once I did my splits ended up like coming into into play a little longer or

faster and I also was able to start pushing a little bit of a speed there without having to actually physically

push speed it just happened out of efficiency so that's what I'm looking for with my shooting so uh now it's time

to ramp it up a little bit maybe change up the order and maybe I'll start from center right sorry Center left right or

right left or something like that so I'm going to mess with around with that after I load and uh you guys will see that in a

sec all right so a little bit of talking to stuff right um when you guys are loading mags I don't know about you but

like I contemplate like all the things I was doing and uh and kind of like hey what

am I messing up what can I can I do better kind of thing and I I kind of go through that um uh I I have found myself

like kind of zoning out when I uh when I load mags which I think is also kind of nice for the brain so I don't think

that's a bad thing but maybe somebody out there know better and and could say like hey that's that's not what we want

with our brains or whatever but you know like hey your brain needs a break sometimes too and kind of needs to rest

so you may find that this a it's a helpful thing or whatever but uh zoning out and just making it like a normal

people task is kind of nice uh but like I said I I tend to like try H what was I

feeling what can I do better on that um if there was something like that sometimes during like uh competitive

Natures or at matches I'll go through and kind of like oh man like I kind of

messed up that spot right there let me kind of fix that for the next rep or next time I go out there or whatever so

sometimes I get into those and that's that's okay in my opinion um I think it's important to be self-reflective in

some form fashion so that you're not uh becoming stagnant and also you're not like full of yourself um and thinking

that you're really good because as you can see like we all miss shots and we're all going to miss shots especially if

you're pushing yourself but if you're one of those people that never want to miss so you can slow down all the time to not miss you're you're failing your

own self in training because you're not actually training at that point you're like patting yourself on the back the

whole day instead so something to try out or maybe play around with to think about in this game but um just something

something I I want to throw at you while I was loading mags sometimes also uh people ask me

like hey John why do you only bring like a couple mags to the range um and and just load every time and it's uh one to

let my gun cool a little bit but it also like I said gives my mind kind of like a break if need be and also uh allows me

to kind of relax a little bit too so it's kind of nice um so what what I'm going to do I'm going to flip the camera

to the other side of me so from where you guys were watching it last time going to watch it from the

opposite mainly cuz like why not see both sides if you're going to do this kind of thing but also uh out of the

that I pushed I think I called that this was the first Target I was trying to shoot and then on the last Target I

whipped a few really hard and you can see there's a lot more edgers this time from previously cuz I was whipping the

gun and then you can see all the hard cover hits from me just not focusing on what I should have focused which is up

so constantly trying to improve boys improve and in whatever way I can right and like it's just it's just practice

all right those aren't too bad but the right one I feel like I'm struggling pretty hard on that one so we going to try and get a couple more out of this

all right so those felt a little better but not not as good as I'd want them to so I'm going to work on a little bit

couple more low ones especially at the beginning there kind of cleaned them up after I had one more to the left here

that I dragged off the Target on my second shot to start moving over to the left there I'm sorry to the right I kind

of dragged over and wa say that one more time so as I I shot second shot ended up

over here as I started to go ahead and try and drag this way cuz my focus was now on the next Target instead of on the

one I was currently on and then over here did a little bit better there's still a couple that kind of hit in here

but it's a little less than the first rep so not too bad but still not not my favorite so it could still be better and

continue to work on so probably a couple more reps of this and uh and then I'll move on to the next thing where I'm

going to try and add a little bit of movement into this and and probably extend some some distance too but

partials are definitely one of my one of my uh uh what weaknesses so I want to make

sure I start to look at them a little bit different and focus on them a little bit different and also give give them

the attention they're they're du right the the higher the difficulty of Target the more I need to give it the the right

amount of Love uh when it comes to uh how I'm orienting those sites so going

once again I can see a different view when I review this stuff to kind of like isolate some of the problems I'm having

which honestly is mostly on the the far Target on the on the left for me so he's

giving me a little bit of issues so I'm really going to try and hone that one in so now I'm going to go uh from the the

the far right target to the far left Target to the center Target the center one is the one I have the least issues

with the far right one is uh I would consider the hardest difficulty right to me but then again not apparently when it

comes to like my shooting and what we've been seeing that is the hardest Target for my difficulty I've gotten the most

misses on that the most passes and and like the whipping that happens and it could be that the separation is a little

wider but uh either way I'm going to start essentially on the the far I'm

sorry the far right one so that I can get my transition to that left one that I'm having trouble with cuz that's the

transition I'm having trouble with so I'm going to keep working on that so that right one to left one to Center one

on that guy but really really easy when it was the first Target um the last Target which kind of what I expected was

came in this way but I don't remember I think it was it was actually one that I came in from the left for sure so or

possibly and then over here really trying to put a lot more focus into it and look at that all pretty much in I'm

happy with that so so improvement from from obviously pre the previous rep

where I was all over the place over here all over the place over here cuz I was just like not in it not in it to Wi it

really try to hone or Focus myself and that's what I ended up with so kind of cool so it's it this is how I practice

guys and and this is just this focus on these partials with these Transitions and really trying to to be cognizant of

where I'm putting my eyes and once I am it usually ends up being really good or at least more better than it was before

and that's the kind of the goal so hopefully hopefully you guys are seeing that uh as you play out uh with this

stuff now that was uh what was that five mags worth yeah five mags Worth to kind

of play around with those things and that's not that's not like a little bit of ammo but it's less than a lot of

people use for just straight up 5 yards burn it down on the Target and never try anything different so recommend that if

especially if you have limited time or limited resources that this is something that you'll stand here and dry practice

for a little bit before you do it live that may help you a lot and save you some ammo also allow your gun to cool

down if that's the case too and then also uh in the long run like that may be

your session right like so make sure you maximize that with some dry fire or dry practice and then do it live from there

so it it's something to kind of play around with cool so hopefully this was educational uh I'm going to do a little

bit of more shooting but I'm not going to do as much uh head talking as I was on this uh on this kind of like Explorer

recommend if you have the the actual partial contrs where you can spray paint them i' I'd do that but I worked with

what I had for today and um and honestly really good training day I'm pretty happy with it overall in the sense of

like what I accomplished I'm not happy with my performance fully um because I I know I could do better and I probably do

this this thing faster I could definitely do my transitions a little bit better than that um but hey that's

what I got today and hopefully this was educational um I'm not saying set yourself up like this and do this exact

thing on your training days um I want you to focus on what you suck at man and if you don't know then I would get into

a match go explore things um even if you discover them in a class or when you're shooting with your buddies you find

something that you suck at write it down so then you have something to train and that way you can you can kind of work on it um my last match I had trouble

partials I I messed up so many partials that I was like okay that's definitely a weak spot uh let me go and actually

practice them so it just so happens that I wanted to shoot rifle today so I did them with rifle and probably tomorrow do
